![]() Founded in 1883 by Marcus Daly, one of the Copper Kings. Today it is a gathering place for tourists eager to enjoy some of the best recreational areas in Montana. This community located in southwestern Montana was once home to the state’s largest copper smelter. It is between Drummond and Anaconda ( The Pintler Scenic Route) on Highway 1 and I-90 between Drummond and Deer Lodge. Anaconda, Montana is one of the most historically significant towns in Montana. Today Washoe is a ghost town with many buildings still standing intact. In 1902 two brothers cleaned up the mine and obtained $18,000 from the first clean up. Men walked across or paid a five cent toll for a horse and buggy, more for teams and heavy wagons. The old toll road from Warm Springs to Southern Cross and Granite used to run through this town. The pioneers of Cable obtained the reputation as intelligent men, hard workers, and caring. The price of gold that was pulled from the claims was high, and rose as almost pure gold was mined. Outside was a big settling pond, tool sheds, and iron balls from a ball mill. Higher still stands the mill with firebricks, timbers, and an iron boiler inside. Up the hill is a boarding house still complete with furniture in the upstairs bedrooms, a kitchen with a range, sink, and a couple of chairs, and worn wallpaper. ![]() This also is the site of the Old Atlantic Cable Mine.Ĭable is made up of three cabins, a big barn with log sides and topped by a weather vane.
